Welcome to my 2nd blog
.
So I have been studying at IIT Delhi for one year. And I have experienced a lot and learned many different words which often came through a conversation with someone.
So here are some of them:
- Fachcha/Fachchi: these words are used for freshers(first-year students)
- Prof: it is used for a professor.
- Tut: abbreviation for tutorial. A practice question sheet, given by professors. Topic-wise generally.
- Banda/Bandi: these two are simple Hindi words, in IIT Delhi, these two words keep a deep meaning. Banda is used for boyfriend as well as Bandi for girlfriend. (as you know it is a rare thing to have a Bandi in IITs.)
- Disco: a short form of Disciplinary committee. A meeting holds to take actions whenever someone breaks the college rules or does something which should not be done according to professors.
- Satti: it is used for grade ‘7’ in a course or semester. Chauki, Panji, Chhakki, atthi, nahli and dassi are also used for 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 grade respectively. But satti is more comment word. If someone says “ meri satti nhi hai” or “satti thuk gyi,” it means he couldn’t score 7 grade. Satti is popular among these because for any post of representative, secretary or coordinator; you need to have a CG of more than seven.
- Hukka: used for humanities courses. One has to complete 15 credits of these courses in 4 years.
- Funda(e): pieces of advice given by seniors to their junior students.
- DepC: short form of ‘department change.’ If one gets good CG after the 1st year than college allows him/her to change his/her branch. But it is a challenging task.
- Machana: a verb which is used when someone has done praisable or extraordinary work.
- Chill hai: most common sentence said by every student. It means “Everything is okay.”
- Thukna: a verb which is used when someone is performed miserably in a course that might affect his/her final grades.
- Rep: abbreviations for representative. Each club has one (or two) rep from each hostel representing their hostels.
- Matka: noun which is used for any student pursuing post-graduation from IITD.
- Stud/Machau: is used for those who do a quite good performance in both acads and non-acads alike. A few people are there who are in this category, and everyone wants to be stud/Machau. (In Hindi you can relate word Machau with the person jo machata hai, look at point no. 10)
- Insti: abbreviations for institute. Most commonly used to the institute area.
- GPL: full form of GPL is “g***d pe laat.” The first gift to a birthday boy by his friends. If you stay at your hostel on your birthday, then you will definitely get the taste of GPL.
- WindT: one of the most popular areas in insti. You can hang out here with your friends after lectures. Full form is Wind Tunnel.
- Secy: abbreviations for Secretary. Each club has one secy who is responsible for the execution of all club activities.
- Hagna: it is a verb. You will hear students talking like “Yaar aaj to viva me hag diya” (if someone screwed the viva) or “ yaar tune to stage pe jate hi hag diya” (if someone is looking very uncomfortable at the stage). It can be used in such a situation when you believe that you have messed it up badly or done something really foolish.
- Junta: refers to a group.
- BT: abbreviations for Bad Trip. When something does not happen as per your expectations or when your planning is excellent, but it cannot occur.
- Convo: abbreviations for convocation.
- coordi: abbreviations for coordinator.
